Case Study: Awareness of Copyright Towards Digital Content

Background:

In July 2015, Hazlin Ibrahim Khan at UiTM Puncak Perdana conducted a study to examine the level of information about PTAR library users regarding copyright laws that oversee digital content. An increase matched the increased utilization of digital platforms by educational libraries in copyright problems in the education sector, and hence, this study was conducted at that time.

What are the Issues?

Studies uncovered a burning problem: despite increased availability of electronic material to students and teachers, most individuals were unaware of the copyright policy. Individuals have the false impression that online material falls in the public domain and could be used, or that educational use is per se "fair use." Misconceptions regarding copyright laws resulted in practices such as plagiarism, copying entire articles without attribution, and sending downloaded e-materials to non-users, both of which might infringe copyright.

Legal Action & Outcome:

A 2015 report found no record of individual suits or disciplinary action on campus, but it did reference the increasing risk of legal sanctions. Copyright violation, either willfully or knowingly, can have severe ramifications for institutions and individuals. Proactive measures within education and policy enforcement are needed to ward off potential future legal issues.

Why does this Case Matter?

This scenario remains relevant nearly a decade after it initially occurred. Those students who were given policy guidance, promotional learning, and copyright education were found to be much more likely to have overwhelmingly online learning environments; these courses are more essential than ever before.

Maintaining content integrity is not just about not being punished; it's also about promoting creativity and backing up the creators of original content. A 2015 case study has proved to be still relevant, which refers to the necessity of raising awareness early and encouraging healthy digital behavior.
